Debit Cards


Q:  How is a Debit Card different from a Credit Card?
A: You can use your Debit Card everywhere MasterCard is accepted, just like a credit card.  However, your Debit Card is not a credit card, so you don’t have to pay interest charges.  Each purchase amount is deducted from your checking account and the details are included on your monthly checking statement.


Q: My Debit/ATM Card has a MasterCard logo on the front. What does that mean?
A: The logo on your card means that it is accepted any where MasterCard Debit Cards are accepted, in place of cash and checks.  The money is always deducted directly from your checking account.


Q: What should I do if my Debit/ATM Card is lost or stolen?
A: Contact Woodlands National Bank immediately by calling 888-532-4142 during bank hours or 800-472-3272 anytime to report your lost or stolen card.


Q: Is it safe to carry and use my MasterCard Debit Card?
A: Yes.  You can call Woodlands National Bank at 888-532-4142 during banking hours or 800-472-3272 anytime and have your Debit Card “frozen” immediately if it is ever lost or stolen.  If you lose cash, the money is gone and will not be replaced.  A lost or stolen check could still be accepted by a merchant, even after you’ve placed a stop payment on it.  Checks also have a great deal of your personal account information (name, account number etc.) pre-printed on them.


Q: Is it safe to use my Debit Card to make purchases on the Internet or over the phone?
A: Yes.  When you use your Debit Card for one of these purchases, it is considered a non-PIN purchase.  Your account is protected the same way it is when you pay in person.  So if someone steals your Debit Card number, you won’t have to pay for any unauthorized purchases. Q: What if someone else tries to use my Debit Card?
A: Woodlands National Bank will attempt to detect unusual transactions that may indicate fraudulent use.  If that happens you will be contacted.


Q: How does Fraud Prevention work?
A: Our Fraud Protection Program simultaneously examines the relationships between transaction and cardholder behavior to predict fraud probability.  The program reviews how and where the card is being used and is designed to block potential fraud if abnormal patterns are detected.  If suspicious activity is detected, we will make a call.


Q: How do I activate my Debit/ATM Card?
A: You may activate your card by calling 800-472-3272 or Woodlands National Bank during banking hours at 888-532-4142.


Q: Can I change my PIN?
A: You may change your PIN by calling the number on the mailer or have Woodlands National Bank send a new PIN mailer. Please call during bank hours at 888-532-4142.


Q: What if I forget my Personal Identification Number (PIN)?
A: You are allowed 3 PIN attempts before your PIN is automatically locked.  The system will reset in 24 hours or contact us to have the PIN attempts reset.  You may try entering your PIN again.  If you need a new PIN please call 888-532-4142 to request a new PIN Mailer to be sent to you.


Q: Will there be a charge / transaction fee to use my ATM card?
A: No charges for using our card however you may receive a surcharge from the company that owns or operates non Woodlands National Bank ATM. (No surcharges at ATMS that participate with the Money Pass network) 


Q: Is there a charge / transaction fee to use my MasterCard Debit Card?
A: There is a monthly charge of $1.25 per card per month on all accounts except Preferred, Select and Select Plus. Please stop by or call for more information about changing accounts.


Q:  What fees from Central Bank are associated with my Debit Card/ATM Card?
A: Debit/ATM Card Replacement Fee is $10.00.


Q:  Can I use my Debit Card when traveling?
A: Yes.  Transactions originated by or in certain countries may be blocked or monitored for being potentially fraudulent transactions.  Please contact Woodlands National Bank at 888-532-4142 to let us know the dates you will be travelling and the countries you will be visiting to ensure your transactions will be accepted. If you do not travel often and plan to take a trip within the U.S. lets us know as well. We will ensure you do not have any trouble with your Debit Card. 


Q: Can I pay my bills with my Debit Card?
A: Yes.  You may want to compare this with Woodlands National Bank’s Online Bill Pay service to choose the payment system that best suits your needs. For example, Woodlands National Bank Bill Pay gives you the control to pay bills and not the company you are paying.


Q: What is an authorization?
A: A pre-authorization is a temporary hold of a specific amount of the available balance on a credit / debit card. The pre-authorization is NOT a charge and you are not responsible for paying for it. This authorization generally confirms that an account is open and the purchase amount is acceptable at the time of the request. Authorization varies by merchant type. Each authorization will show as a pending transaction until the actual purchase amount is deducted from your account, usually within two to three business days.


Q: What could cause a pending transaction or authorization amount to be different from my actual purchase amount?
A: An authorization may vary from the final purchase amount in situations where there is an estimated authorization amount or a tip is involved. For example at a restaurant an authorization is requested prior to a tip being added. The final purchase amount will include the tip. Another example, at the gas pump, an initial authorization is requested prior to dispensing fuel and determining the final amount of the purchase. Many (not all) pay-at-the-pump gas purchases are initially authorized for $1 no matter the final purchase amount.


Q: When will the actual purchase amount replace the pending amount and be posted to my account?
A: It may take several business days for the actual purchase amount to replace the pending transaction amount on your account. 


Q:  How do I keep track of purchases I make with my Debit Card?
A: You can track all Debit Card purchases with Online Banking. Every purchase will also appear on your monthly checking account statement. You may also continue to use your check register.


Q: If I swipe my Debit Card at a keypad in a store, which button should I press – “credit” or “debit”?
A: You may select either one. “Credit” the most convenient. Swipe and sign!  The “debit” selection requires you to enter a PIN.  For both “credit” and “debit” transactions, funds are deducted from your checking account.


Q:  What is a non-PIN purchase?
A: Any transaction that does not require you to enter your PIN is considered a non-PIN purchase.  The following are considered non-PIN purchases:
     -Swipe your card at a keypad, press “credit” and sign the receipt.
     -Bill payments with your Debit Card.
     -Use your card to make a purchase on the Internet, by phone or at the gas pump.
